Campo Imperatore (AQ)

Skiing in Abruzzo

Surrounded by peaks exceeding 2,500 m and by enchanting sceneries in the heart of the Gran Sasso d'Italia, Campo Imperatore is a wide plateau, of glacial and Karst-alluvial origin; it is located in a more or less equidistant position from all the provinces of the region and can be easily reached via the towns of both L’Aquila and Pescara provinces.

It stretches over 15 km in length and 5 km in width, starting from 1,500 m and reaching 2,100 m in altitude and is part of the Gran Sasso - Monti della Laga National Park.

Campo Imperatore is nicknamed ‘Small Tibet’ for the unique similarity, though on a smaller scale, of its sceneries with those of the wide Asian plateau, which evoke feelings of ‘full and nostalgic solitude’ towards of the majesty of nature. The plateau is the ideal destination for cross-country ski lovers; here five loops unwind, with 52 km of always perfectly groomed trails, suitable for both beginners and experts and for both classic and skating techniques.

Every last Sunday of February the plateau hosts the most important skiing event in central-southern Italy, the Campo Imperatore Marcia Longa, organised by the municipality of Castel Del Monte and by the Polisportiva association.

Further winter sports disciplines that can be practiced here are alpine skiing, ski touring and snowshoeing.
