The valley of relaxation (Hiking in Abruzzo)

At about 2.5km from Ovindoli, in a south east direction, we find the Valle d’Arano, an integral part of the Sirente-Velino Regional Park.

The valley was a lake basin in ancient times, originating from the La Foce stream, which also created the Celano-Aielli gorge, one of Italy’s most picturesque natural canyons.

An easy circuit for walkers and cyclists develops across the valley, on a recently built track that is also suitable for pushchairs.

To reach the trail, we pass by the Pinetina, a park on the outskirts of town, with a playground and picnic area.

After the riding stables we reach a small bridge where we should leave our vehicle as the area is closed to traffic.

The valley is concealed by rock faces at its entrance, closing the view from sight. It is about 2km long and 500m at its widest point.

There are several information boards in the park to describe local fauna, flora and habitats. At the entrance to the valley we find a number of cultivated fields while the rest of the land is used for grazing and hay production.

If we walk in the opposite direction around the circuit, we will reach shady beech woods at the bottom of the valley.

Here we can make a wide turn to the left, about halfway along the trail at a small bridge over the stream, and we find a picnic area with a drinking water fountain.

The second part of the itinerary winds through woods that are mainly hazelnut.

Unspoiled landscapes for all strides
