The loveliest woods of the Apennines (Hiking in Abruzzo)

Located in the mid-Sangro area, at about 1,000m, the Rosello fir grove is one of the loveliest woodlands in the Apennines. The route starts from the centre of Rosello, at the Visitor Centre with its Museo della Riserva.

We walk down towards a small watercourse and climb up to the town’s pine grove, as far as a pond, with its picnic area and campsite. Continuing on the tarmac road and passing the hostel, we reach a barrier closing the entrance to the reserve.

Here we enter the woods and, after about 300m, we find the deer wildlife area on the left. About 500m further and we reach Fonte Volpuna, ancient springs with a rest area. Taking the path to the right, we walk along a ridge until we skirt the provincial road.

From here, we reach the outer edge of the forest, going down until we reach the bridge over the Turcano stream (4).

Then we go back up along the track and make a detour to reach Mount Castellano. Back on the main trail, we turn left onto a dirt road marking the border of the reserve, and continue to Fonte del Puolo, then proceed downhill immersed in mountain pastures.

From here, the route flanks a vast panorama as far as a hairpin bend, and then up to the bridge over the Turcano. At this point we turn upwards, leaving Fonte Vecchia on the left.

At an intersection with another fountain, we turn left and after 100m, turn right and back to the starting point.

Unspoiled landscapes for all strides
