The fascinating world of rock (Hiking in Abruzzo)

Mount Gran Sasso is limestone, with varied morphology and landscape. This side of the mountain is rugged and wild, and Corno Grande, its highest peak, shows its horseshoe ridge with three peaks: one to the east, one to the centre (2,893m), and one to the west, which is the range’s tallest point.

These peaks are definitely for experienced hikers but everyone else can certainly enjoy the charm of the mountain, using trails like ours, which lead to the cable-car station.

From the Prati di Tivo forecourt, we turn left (east) on a paved road that then becomes a dirt track and ascends to a broad pass between Cima Alta and the foot of the Arapietra crest.

We continue as far as Piana del Laghetto (1,650m), which is 3km away and offers a large parking area.

Path 103 starts to the right, by the bend and runs along a grassy hillock above a small valley, which is shortly after a broad curve (a cross to the left). Crossing a dirt road we reach (to the right) the great Arapietra crest.

The trail becomes steeper and follows the crest then the slope decreases and we reach the ruins of a hotel.

The route continues uphill until we reach the cable car station. The return is back along the same path and we can use the cable car for the return trip (consult timetables beforehand).

Unspoiled landscapes for all strides
