The Valley of the Hundred Waterfalls

Hiking in Abruzzo

The Valley of the Hundred Waterfalls (Hiking in Abruzzo)

The picturesque Cento Cascate valley takes its name from the number of waterfalls (around 100) that the Fosso dell’Acero stream feeds in its dizzying descent through the ancient beeches.

The area is dotted with beautiful wildflowers including several species of orchids.

From Piazza San Pietro, in Cesacastina, we take Via Trieste northwards (Cento Fonti signpost).

After about 2km, we cross Le Piane and come to a fork (1,327m). We can leave vehicles here and take the left-hand path (CAI 354). After about 900m of forest track, we take the left path (354) for about 1km, when we reach a new junction.

We turn left and keep going upwards until we leave the beech forest, where we can see the water course with its leaping waterfalls.

We proceed on the grassy track that skirts the rocky stream bed, taking care not to get too close to the watercourse as the sandy bottom is slippery and very dangerous.

After approximately 500m we turn right on the track and cross the stream using the stones in place to make this easier. An alternative route is to climb towards the Anfiteatro delle Cento Fonti and Mount Gorzano (challenging).

To turn back, just after the crossing, we can bear right on track 5, with several hairpin bends, until we reach the beech forest.

Following the trail for about 3km we reach the fork (359), turn right onto the dirt track (6) in the Vercereti district. After 2km we return to our starting point.

Unspoiled landscapes for all strides
