Over 2,000 m on Mount Gran Sasso

Hiking in Abruzzo

Over 2,000 m on Mount Gran Sasso (Hiking in Abruzzo)

The itinerary is fascinating, along the airy, scenic border between the Abruzzo provinces of L’Aquila and Teramo.

From the Campo Imperatore forecourt car park, we bear to the left of the Giardino Botanico Alpino, which is open in summer. These botanical gardens offer more than 3,500sqm of plants from the high-altitude habitats of Gran Sasso and Monti della Laga National Park. Then we meet the astronomy observatory, open by appointment for day and night visits.

Our path is now obviously upwards and after the first 500m we pass a right turn for Mount Aquila (101).

We proceed along a road with bends as far as the Duca degli Abruzzi refuge (around 1.4km, with a height difference of 250m), open in summer (see website). The view here is staggering as the massif ’s main peaks seem so close. We now go left (100) up to the Mount Portella ridge.

Looking north, we see Campo Pericoli’s gentle slopes and the chamois that were recently reintroduced.

Then we each the narrow Passo della Portella pass, connecting Assergi and Pietracamela. After 400m we turn left at the intersection (102) and enter the large Portella valley.

A further 800m takes us to the fork and keeping left we head for Passo del Lupo (2,156m).

If we continue on the path that cuts across the slope horizontally we come to the cable car station.

Unspoiled landscapes for all strides
