Barrea, a lake and the Park’s loveliest mountains

Hiking in Abruzzo

Barrea, a lake and the Park’s loveliest mountains (Hiking in Abruzzo)

The itinerary leads along the shores of Lake Barrea, a reservoir created in 1952, at the heart of Abruzzo, Lazio and Molise National Park’s loveliest mountains.

At Civitella Alfedena we start near the Appennine wolf museum, down a short stretch of the provincial road for Villetta Barrea, take the path (I3) on our right, at the entrance to the pine woods.

We continue on the left of the green panel, downhill, along the grassy road. We proceed downhill and bear right, entering mixed woodlands where we can also spot squirrels.

At the bottom, past the town’s small purifying system, the path bears right and goes straight to the provincial road (2).

A little further down, before reaching the southern end of the bridge, we change direction, entering a large car park on the right, passing the barrier and continuing along the dirt road that skirts the entire reservoir.

When we reach Colle Ciglio (3) (a hillock with pine woods), the dirt road continues downhill until we reach the campsite entrance on the right.

After about 300m, to make the trail more interesting, we change direction onto another dirt road, on the left. We pass a second refreshment point, slightly downhill, and cross a broad stream (4), then skirt the lake, climbing to the entrance of the lower part of the village of Barrea (5).

The Medieval hamlet, perched on a spur at 1,066m, overlooks the artificial Lake Barrea and is well worth visiting. We return retracing our steps along the same path.

Unspoiled landscapes for all strides
