A triangular tower in a valley (Hiking in Abruzzo)

The trail begins in the old village of Montegualtieri, at the foot of its famous triangular medieval tower, set strategically in a dominant position over the River Vomano valley.

From the village we take Via del Torrione eastwards and meet a downhill path, lined with great oaks.

The plain is not far ahead and we pass an old water mill, once owned by the De Sterlich family, also proprietors of the triangular tower.

Crossing the tarmac road, we take the track that turns left after 150m, heading to the west, and skirt the small angling lake, then continue along the path (sometimes not very clear) between the fields (to the left) and the Vomano riverbank (right), as far as a narrow road that turns south.

We cross the tarmac road, take the path that zig-zags up across the hillside amidst groves and scenic spots overlooking the lovely surrounding countryside.

After 2.5km we reach the provincial road where we can turn left towards Montegualtieri.

Shortly after the small cemetery, we take the path on the right, and flanked by oaks and olive trees we return to our starting point.

Unspoiled landscapes for all strides
